History of Birla Planetarium
The Birla Planetarium was established in September 1962, while the building was formally inaugurated in July 1963 by the then Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This was a major step in the field of education, research and development of scientific temperament as this planetarium was the second to become the first to be established in India.
Architecture of Birla Planetarium
The Birla Planetarium is a single-storey circular structure, designed in the typical Indian style, whose architecture resembles the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi. It has an electronics laboratory for designing and manufacturing science equipment. It has an astronomy gallery which maintains a large collection of exquisite paintings and astronomical models from famous astronomers. The Planetarium also has an astronomical observatory equipped with a Celestron C-14 telescope with accessories such as ST6 CCD cameras and solar filters.
